The Pacific Islands Tuna Industry Association (PITIA) launched its new website at Nadi, Fiji Islands on December 4th. The announcement was attended by representatives from the industry and Pacific Islands government fisheries agencies, as well as members of the media.
One of PITIA’s key activities is information dissemination. The new website will enable PITIA to update its members as well as a larger audience across the Pacific and beyond. “PITIA members and tuna industry stakeholders are spread across a vast region. PacificTuna.org will help us convey useful information to fishermen, processors and key decision makers in a much more efficient manner,” said PITIA Executive Officer John Maefiti.
The website was funded in part by Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). EDF’s Senior Fisheries Manager Sarah O’Brien attended the launch announcement and joined with PITIA chair Frank Wickham, in expressing the importance of industry participation in fishery management processes. “This new website will help PITIA to coordinate our communications strategies, inform industry stakeholders and advocate for our domestic fisheries,” said Mr. Wickham.
