The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) Legal team delivered a training on Investigations and Evidence Management for the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) Compliance Officers and few enforcement agencies of the Government.

FFA undertook this training in response to MFMR request for capacity training on the relevant Fisheries laws in particular focusing on investigations and evidence management. This training was hosted in Munda from 19-23 April for one week. Twenty-three officers completed the training requirements including seven Noro based Fisheries Officers.

The objectives of the training were threefold, namely to: 1) Improve understanding of Solomon Islands Fisheries legislation; 2) Strengthen ability to identify offences and evidentiary requirements and prepare charges and 3) Enhance skills in investigations and evidence management.

To promote competence in the subject, participants completed an exam and all were successful. The exam tested the participants’ knowledge of national fisheries legislation and their skills on how to better apply the law including in the identification of evidence, management of evidence, and the prosecution of fisheries offences.

The World Bank PROP provided funding support for this training.
