The MFMR Compliance Unit enforces all Solomon Islands Fisheries laws and regulation in line with the Solomon Islands Fisheries Management Act 2015. The Unit also ensure that all licensed Companies and fishing vessels operating in Solomon Islands do comply with all their License terms and conditions and all requirements under all international fisheries conservation and management measures.
This is to ensure that our marine and fisheries resources are harvested sustainably and lawfully, to achieve long term socio-economic benefits for our country and future generations.
The compliance tools used and activities carried out by the section includes; transhipment and unloading monitoring, in Port and at sea boarding and inspection, investigation and case filing, Aerial and Surface surveillance, Export Inspection, Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) and Vessel Day Scheme (VDS) Monitoring. Also, another major role is conducting catch documentation scheme (CDS) including traceability from the point of catch through landing to export to combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing activity.
